Group Description

Edinburgh and Glasgow, only divided by 45km, have a strong history of collaboration in the imaging field. The Brain Imaging Centre for Scotland, established by the Scottish Higher Education Funding Council in Edinburgh in 1999, has a good record of accomplishment in collaborative structural and functional MRI, MRS and SPECT. Its scientific committee includes scientists from Edinburgh, Glasgow, St Andrews, Stirling and Dundee (Chair: Ebmeier). The Institute of Neurological Sciences in Glasgow, in collaboration with the West of Scotland Radionuclide Dispensary, has been at the forefront of radionuclide development for SPECT for the last 10 years. The Institute has 3 Tesla MRI exclusively for brain imaging. The Radionuclide Dispensary has a development facility for novel ligands and in the past five years has produced 8 compounds that have been used in in-vivo human studies. Both Edinburgh and Glasgow have Neurofocus SPECT cameras. These are state-of-the-art imaging systems with high sensitivity and depth independent resolution of between around 5mm. [read more]
